Watchmen (2009) [Director’s Cut]

movieposter⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☁️ 4/5   [R]

Watchmen is Zack Snyder’s film adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name which takes place in an alternate 1985 and is about former superheroes coming out of retirement after an old colleague is murdered. As far as book-to-film adaptations go this is a job pretty well done, its very faithful to the source material and cuts out and changes only minor things and only when necessary, until, that is, 30 minutes before the end of the movie when a major plot point is severely altered which I believe took a great deal of emotional weight out of the story. The casting choices for all the characters (especially Jackie Earle Haley who is perfect casting for Rorschach) are great, except for Matthew Goode as Adrian Veidt which I think was the wrong decision for the character. There is plenty to like about this film though, the cinematography, tone, action scenes, and music choices (nearly all of them are directly from the novel) are all great. Even though Watchmen is not as emotional or deep as the graphic novel, it is a great action epic that is worth watching.

There is a lot of violence and sex in this film so I definitely wouldn’t suggest younger than a mature 14 to watch this.

Book Review: Watchmen (1986-1987)

Watchmen-21⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5

UNMISSABLE

Watchmen is an ingenious science-fiction graphic novel/limited series that takes place in an alternate history where superheroes emerged in American society during the 40s and 60s and vigilantism is now outlawed, the story follows two generations of superheroes from the close of World War II to the Cold War. It is truly an extraordinary masterpiece of visual and literary storytelling, it uses synchronicity, symbolism, and repeated imagery brilliantly and virtually every detail in every captivating panel means something. The highly fleshed out mythology and characters are extremely intriguing. Watchmen has inspired and continues to inspire many other works of art and I believe it is the best book I have ever read so I very highly recommend it to everyone that has not read it at least once before.

Watchmen deals with many mature subject matters and is very complex, 14 is the youngest I would recommend this too.

Wind River (2017)

Wind-River-New-Film-Poster⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5   [R]

Wind River is a chilling thriller about a veteran game tracker/hunter and an FBI agent working together to solve a murder on the Wind River Native American reservation. This film does an incredible job of creating a consistent cinematic atmosphere for its desolate, bleak location with the cinematography, music, and acting, all of which are fantastic. Jeremy Renner gives probably the best performance of his career and the score is hauntingly beautiful. The action scenes in Wind River are stunning, the level of tension and realism is very impressive, they are few in number but that just makes the handful of action scenes that much more poignant. Overall Wind River is an excellent and impactful neo-western thriller that I think is one of the best films of the year and I definitely recommend you watch.

I wouldn’t suggest letting your kids younger than 14 watch Wind River.

TV Review: A Series of Unfortunate Events (2017-)

mv5bmtuxmjizodi0nv5bml5banbnxkftztgwmdk3oti2mdi-_v1_sy1000_cr007041000_al_⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☁️ 4/5   [TV-PG]

Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events is an extremely unique and whimsical self-aware story about three siblings orphaned by a deadly fire uncovering dark family secrets and it is based on the book series of the same name. Neil Patrick Harris and Patrick Warburton are great, the child actors are pretty good and I really loved the soundtrack. The story is told/narrated by Lemony Snicket (Patrick Warburton) in a way that gives a feeling of peculiarity and freshness to the show. I highly recommend trying A Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix because you have without a doubt never seen anything like it, at first it will seem very strange and unusual but you will quickly get used to it’s unique atmosphere and learn to embrace it by the time you finish season 1.

Although intentionally dark and despairing, this series is actually kind of lighthearted, kids 9 and up can probably watch it without a problem.

Available on Netflix.

Arrival (2016)

mv5bmjm5nzixnzk2ov5bml5banbnxkftztgwnzm5nzq3ote-_v1_sy1000_cr006401000_al_⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☁️ 4/5   [PG-13]

Arrival is a hard science fiction film about mysterious spaceships suddenly appearing around earth and revolves around the linguist who is selected to communicate with the alien visitors. I was a little bit underwhelmed by this film because it had been over-hyped to me but it is a great movie with really good production design. Arrival is a slow burn but it pulls it off very well, If you enjoy the hard sci-fi genre then you will no doubt like this film.

Kids 10 and up should be able to watch Arrival but some may find it boring.

Available on iTunes and Amazon.

TV Review: Colony (2016-)

colony-poster-7_595_mini-logo-tv-white-gallery⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☁️ 4/5   [TV-14]

Colony is a fairly unique sci-fi drama series that takes place in the near future and centers around a family trying to stay together in an occupied Los Angeles. The show was created by Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Ryan J. Condal, it stars Josh Holloway (Lost) and Sarah Wayne Callies (The Walking Dead). The acting and the characters are decent but what I really liked about this show is the mystery of how Los Angeles came to be the way it is, which keeps you coming back for answers. Overall Colony isn’t amazing but it’s solidly entertaining and has a fresh story so I suggest trying season 1 on Netflix if you haven’t already!

Most or all of the content in Colony is appropriate for kids 13 and up.

Available on iTunes, Netlfix, and Amazon.

TV Review: Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (2016-)

mv5bmtu3mdkznzm5nf5bml5banbnxkftztgwmzeyntgymdi-_v1_⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5

UNMISSABLE

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (based on the novels of the same name by Douglas Adams) is a Sci-Fi Mystery centered around a self-proclaimed Holistic Detective by the name of Dirk Gently, his reluctant “assistant” Todd Brotzman, and many other strange characters. It is very weird in a very good way and the acting, writing, and music all perfectly set the tone of the show. The diverse group of intriguing characters and complicated mysteries will almost definitely keep you hooked, so if you like offbeat or unusual shows I recommend you try this rare and peculiar series.

There is a decent amount of violence but nothing that kids 12 and up won’t be able to handle.

Available on iTunes and Amazon.
